The EVA Shelf is another attempt at bringing a playful touch of colours into the domestic landscape. Created at the same time as the EVA light, the idea for this shelf came from the interest in EVA which stands for ethyl vinyl acetate and is a foam material. It is naturally stretchy and has rubber-like qualities. Commonly used to produce flat shapes, the challenge of the project was to process this material into three dimensions. François Dumas was introduced to it through the shoes industry where it’s commonly used for outsoles. He was seduced by its bright colours due to the density of the material and felt a resonance with its personality and universe. Stemming from a fascination of Dumas for anechoic chambers, the shelves are reminiscent of their aesthetic. Blocks of EVA foam are cut into wing shapes and assembled in a superposition of massive colour pieces. The rubbery material is flexible and the shelves imprison what they contain as small items can be clamped in between the layers. Its density also allows it to place bigger objects on the horizontal surfaces.
